Alright blogstalkers, I finally have a few minutes... ;)
Abandoned and tortured children. Yes, I'm going there..
So, Dr. Seattle's bro works with the MOST interesting organization. Check out this site. It is beautifully well-done - but look at what these 3 high-schoolers have done!!!! A totally grabbable context to HELP in Africa. I love this.
2 of my sis-in-law's are actually pumping breast milk for babies in africa. I know, graphic, but how COOL is that? If you don't have the girl parts or aren't wet nurses at heart, what could you give?
I come from a place where it is important to help those around you as well as OUTSIDE of your circles. It's a big world!!
Yes, I'm buzzing on my Timor Maubesse.
I hope this doesn't turn you all off...

I'm a wet nurse at heart, but unfortunately I'm not a wet nurse at the boobies. Not yet, anyway...
Money is always important to give. There are some fantastic organizations out there that are really working to change things. My favorite is International Justice Mission. The website is http://www.ijm.org. They work to rescue people trapped in slavery and forced prostitution. Their four-fold purpose, as they put it on their website, is victim relief, perpetrator accountability, structural prevention, and victim aftercare. They're an amazing organization that has some fantastically talented people working for them.
Bethany, what is the link to the organization you were talking about?
Oh, and to answer your question, people who desire to give need to look at their talents. Are you a lawyer? Perhaps you could work on behalf of victims. Are you a health care professional? Perhaps you could provide health care for the needy. Are you a writer? Perhaps you could write articles on the importance of recognizing social injustice or highlighting certain problems in this or other countries. As a blogger, I know I am extremely grateful to writers who illuminate problems for me that I didn't know about before. It helps me to want to get involved, in whatever small way I'm capable.
Thank you for ridding us of the 'Sexy Mess'. (Just Kidding!!) :-)
Which site is this?
I love your change of subject!! Keep it up girl!!
The organization is called Invisible Children. There is a link on my blog.
Thanks Dr.,it's just so hard to be THIS cute and smart, too!
Sara - love the focus factor. Passion drives action, eh?

Well, as one of the SIL's who are pumping milk for HIV/AIDS babies in Africa, I just could not imagine NOT doing it. It's free. It requires very little time. Pro-lacta sponsors the project and they pay for shipping, supplies, and give you a free electric pump. And Breastmilk is the perfect food. I'll get off of the soap-box. LOL!! In addition to that, I love the "RED" line. You can buy stuff and $ goes to Africa. Did you know that you can go to the Red web-site and you can input what RED product that you are buying and it will tell you what that amount of $$ buys in Africa. For example, 1 RED Motorola Phone=HIV MEds for 100 AFrican Women. I love fell-good purchases like that!! Whether it is locally or world-wide, use the gifts that God gave you to make a difference in the life of someone...TODAY.
Invisible CHildren just launched their Schools For Schools program today. Basically, US schools adopt schools in Uganda. Check out the link - http://s4s.invisiblechildren.com/ - .... I am amazed at what these kids are accomplishing so quickly using things like MySpace and YouTube. If I had that kind of chutzpa, I'd be the leader of a crime syndicate and not out trying to save these kids in Uganda. Total focus can achieve mighty results.
Last fall in Mozambique, B's dad was talking to Rolland Baker who had just returned from the Congo - people, young and old, starving left and right. It was amazing that 10 measley dollars would feed lunch (rice) to 100 people ... sometimes there is a place for the old checkbook, especially when you know it won't go for any administrative costs.
And that's why Invisible Children is such an awesome organization. For example, in their bracelet campaign, they pay people living in refugee camps to make bracelets and then turn around and sell the bracelets at a profit, all of which goes back into africa. A $60 donation to IC will pay the wages of a refugee to make 16 bracelets. The 16 bracelets are then shipped and sold in the US for a profit of $300, which is then sent back to Uganda to build schools and such. So they take your money, give it to a needy person who makes them a product, then make a profit on that product that does more in Africa. It's like killing two birds with one stone.
Can you help me out? I'm not finding info on the invisible children web site about sending breast milk to Africa. Is there a certian link that I'm missing?
