Must read

2 books to read this summer:

1. Interior Desecrations by James Lileks - OMILORD! If you enjoy a little sarc, you will die happy. U.R - This is REQUIRED reading.

2. Grandmere - life of Eleanor Roosevelt by David Roosevelt - Deep satisfying and fabulous. What an amazing down to earth world changing woman. Spectacular.

I read ALL THE TIME. Even when my kids were younger I would use that as an EXCUSE to go read...the only way I could wind down on some days! Now that they're bigger it's even better: we go to the beach I read. We play in the backyard I read. They watch a movie on Nickolodeon I read. Right now I'm reading Amistad; can't watch the movie (don't do well watching people get beaten) but a book I can close if I need to and come back when I'm ready! Amistad the book is fabulous, if a little slow because of its depth in some parts. For fun summer reading I highly recommend The Princess Diaries; totally cute, funny diary entries of a high school freshman girl. It'll, like, totally have you, like, saying "Oh ma gawwddd I'm totally gonna die" from the first page:) Just light and cute

Yeah, Jenny, you're definitely NOT gonna want to watch the movie. It's a rough one.

thus the preference of books; can't tell you how many times i closed stephen king's misery and pet semetary only to return after a breather. do that too often with a flick and after awhile you just ruin the vcr! so no, i have no intention of watching amistad. the first paragraph in the novel is the main character chained to the lifeless body of a little boy, dead in the belly of the ship. yuck.

Sara you reading anything good? Any top choices?

Hmm... let me see.

I'm in the middle of "The Silmarillion" by Tolkein, which is pretty fantastic.

Other good summer reading: Interior Castle by St. Teresa of Avila, A Return to Modesty by Wendy Shalit, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende, Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy.

Oh, and I'm trying to get my hands on some of the stories from the Lovecraftian Cthulhu Mythos.

can't begin to pronounce whatever the Lovecraftian thing is. explain?!

Mrs. Sara said...

Sorry, Jenny. Cthulhu (pronounced ka-too-loo or ka-thoo-loo) is an ancient being created by the horror author H.P. Lovecraft. After his death, many other writers continued writing stories and legends associated with the universe Lovecraft created, and this collection of stories is labeled as the "Lovecraftian Mythos" or the "Cthulhu Mythos."

Dan read me one of the stories one night, and it scared the living crap out of me. ;)

beth you apparently only have 2 friends who read. we're both from valpo i might add:)

Mrs. Sara said...

Venture too far outside Valpo city limits and there's pretty much a 100% illiteracy rate.

Valpo as center of civilized universe? Interesting concept. Tres scary, as well.

Message for Faith!
I'm not getting on to your blog. Something moronic, I'm sure, but blogspot seems to be messing with me. Just want you to know that I'm checking in and am frustrated by the process. Keep going, girl.
It's so easy here, to just use "other" for identity.
Watch.
